New Anti-aircraft missile system S-500, developed by Air Defense Concern Almaz-Antey, will be based on the S-400 Triumph. This, according to ITAR-TASS, said former chief of Russian Air Force, Army General Anatoly Kornukov. According to him, S-500 will differ from the S-400 smaller power consumption and in terms of 'filling' ".

However, as noted Kornukov, S-500, probably will not increase range of target engagement. "S-400 - it is a cumbersome, expensive, energy absorbing system, although the parameters it is quite effective," - added a former Air Force Commander.

In mid-September 2009 Russian Air Force Commander Col. Gen. Alexander Zelin said that the S-500 is a "qualitatively new system, which is not a continuation of the S-400. He noted that the complex appears promising in the near future. Later, CEO Concern PVO Almaz-Antey Igor Ashurbeyli told that the development of S-500 will be completed in 2015. By this time, there are also plans to build two new plants - for the construction of missiles and ground-based equipment.

S-500 is designed to intercept ballistic missiles with ranges up to 3,5 thousand kilometers of medium and close distances, flying at speeds of up to five thousand meters per second. Supposedly the new complex will be able to simultaneously fire up to ten hypersonic targets. The range of the S-500 is about 600 kilometers.
